Exhibition Description
The Sculptors Society of Canada is pleased to be joining the World of Threads Festival this year as a Toronto exhibition venue.
The SSC is an organization of Canadian sculptors that promotes and fosters Canadian sculpture. We also, occasionally, exhibit international work and it was our intention to find, from far corners, work of exceptional caliber for this exhibition. Thus, we have work coming from the UK, Germany and from across the USA. Canadian fibre artists have also been chosen from Vancouver, BC and London, ON.
From the outset, it was decided that the exhibition would be an equitable sharing of space with invited/selected international artists and SSC sculptors (most of whom do not normally work in a fibre manner). When selecting pieces, all work had to be sculpture, had to be created by fibre/thread processing and/or materials, and had to be well designed, expertly executed, and speak beyond its fabrication. Size was a formidable consideration as our gallery is not huge – however, a range of sizes, from mere inches to many feet, have been chosen.
As it happens, the exhibition will be completely feminist. It will showcase an equal sharing of totally abstract and figurative approaches with a smattering of pop. There are to be five artists invited from abroad, three from Canada, along with six SSC members chosen from our call. We are excited and looking forward to this exhibition.

Common Thread International Exhibitions
The Common Thread International exhibitions are the flagship shows of the World of Threads Festival. Hundreds of artists from around the world submitted bodies of work, installations or individual pieces to the Festival. Multiple curators from various Oakville and Toronto galleries have created exciting exhibitions based on their own unique interests. We bring international contemporary fibre art to Oakville and the Toronto area as well as highlight the strength of our local artists.
Venue
The Canadian Sculpture Centre joined the festival for 2012. SSC is solely dedicated to the education, promotion and exhibition of contemporary Canadian sculpture. This Common Thread International exhibition will be curated by Sculptor/Co-Director Richard McNeill and asst. curator Sculptor Shuhui Lee.
