Curatorial Statement

While viewing the submissions for the Common Thread International, curator Dawne Rudman was most caught by the work in neutral colours and from this, an idea emerged. Neutral colours are often used as a background or to give a highlight to something. However, neutral shades can also be elegant, alluring and strong, deserving prominent recognition in their own right. For this reason, she decided to make them the focus of this show.

Ranging from the blacks and charcoals with their dusky, shadowy hues, to the frosted, milky, or chalky whites, the work also explored the café au lait, creamy caramels, sand and tan shades. A rich range of opposites and complements was the result, made more exciting by the variations in texture. There were fragile pieces, which almost begged for protection. There were others that in spite of being multi-layered were very revealing. Some were made of silk or paper adding to their delicate appearance, some had a luminous quality, and some cast gentle shadows.

All their differences aside though, the work in this exhibition engaged the viewer in a remarkable visual feast of blending and intertwining hues and textures. There were 25 artists in this exhibition, hailing from Austria, Canada, England, France, Ireland and the USA.

The Gallery at Queen Elizabeth Park Community and Cultural Centre is Oakville's newest cultural centre just opened in April 2012. We were very exhited to be one of the first exhibitions in this spectacular new gallery.

Common Thread International Exhibitions

The Common Thread International exhibitions are the flagship shows of the World of Threads Festival. Hundreds of artists from around the world submitted bodies of work, installations or individual pieces to the Festival. Multiple curators from various Oakville and Toronto galleries have created exciting exhibitions based on their own unique interests. We bring international contemporary fibre art to Oakville and the Toronto area as well as highlight the strength of our local artists.
